The Myth of “Client Knows Best”

I’ve been doing this a long time. I have a First-Class Honours degree in Visual Communication and Design and I’ve worked in branding, UI/UX design and brand development since 2017 - long before AI templates and Canva “brands” flooded the market.
I’ve spent years building strategies, brands and websites that don’t just look good - they perform. So when I say an idea won’t work, it’s not coming from ego or stubbornness. It’s experience.
Some client ideas just don’t work out - and I don’t need to spend an hour mocking it up to know that. I can see it instantly: the colour clashes, the overused fonts, the inconsistent messaging, the visual chaos that makes a brand feel like it doesn’t know what it’s doing.
Sometimes the concept you think will “save time” or “stand out” is actually the thing that’ll make your brand look cheap, confuse your audience, and cost you more to fix later.
Cheap Work Always Costs More...
It’s always more expensive to build something bad than it is to build something better.
Because once it’s live, people form opinions. They see your brand, your website, your social media - and they decide whether or not to trust you within seconds.
Bad branding doesn’t just waste money. It damages credibility.
The Difference Experience Makes
I’ve worked with hundreds of brands across Scotland and beyond - from startups in the Highlands to established US businesses - and every successful project had one thing in common: trust.
The clients who got the best results were the ones who let me challenge them. It didn't always start well, but they soon saw the results.
They valued insight over instant approval. That’s where real growth happens - when you hand over the creative reins to someone who’s done this before and wants to see your business win, not just look pretty
When I Say No, Here’s What I’m Really Saying...
I’m protecting your investment. I’m protecting your reputation. I’m protecting your results and, let’s be honest, my name that sits on the bottom of your website too.
You’re not hiring me for blind agreement.
You’re hiring me for expertise, clarity and standards.
Good branding doesn’t happen when you say yes to everything. It happens when you trust the process, kill the bad ideas, and build something stronger in their place.
That’s where the magic happens. ✨
